The Aztecs were almost on top of the world. But when the Spaniards came, they weren't quite ready. There were several different reasons also, that seemed to be just a coincidence for the conquest by Hernan Cortez and his troops. Here are some reasons:
1. When the Spaniards came into Aztec territory, it was a sacred year for them religiously when one god was supposed to come and reclaim the Aztec land and make things better.
2. The leader of the Aztecs, Montizuma, believed the Spaniards were gods and he gave them gifts, asking them to come back later, since they believed gods were completely immortal.
3. It was during a certain month that the Aztec people were storing and harvesting their crops, preparing for later. The only problem was that during this period they were not supposed to prepare for war. Montizuma was very unsure if he should prepare for war after he asked Cortez to stop and he didn't.
Because of these reasons and the fighting skill of the Spaniards the Aztec reign ended. There was nobody left after the Spaniards came in.
